Policy interventions against AMR: a focus on national and international action
This is the keynote lecture of the annual AMR Short Course, combined with the AMR Centre’s Seminar Series.
As all eyes turn towards the next policy milestone – the UN General Assembly High-level meeting on AMR in 2024 - an intense flurry of activity is underway to try and influence member states and the agendas of global bodies towards the wording and policy interventions that will be contained within the resulting political declaration. Much focus is already on financing mechanisms for new therapeutics within the G7, surveillance within the G20, and the potential for unifying targets for countries to achieve. But are these the answers to mitigating AMR on a global scale? This discussion will focus on the premise that the agendas, priorities, and needs of the global north and south relating to mitigation of AMR, are not one and the same, despite an accepted desire “to leave no one [country] behind.”
