Resilient health systems – financing national and global priorities

Discussing how to fund health-related global public goods in the face of an increased need and intensifying fiscal constraints.

GHECO event card

Spending on health-related global public goods (GPGs) – such as prevention, preparedness, and response, as well as product development for infectious diseases – is critical in preparing for global health threats. But production of these GPGs may require new and innovative sources of finance, both domestic and external, and public and private, particularly as needs grow and fiscal constraints intensify.

This presentation will summarise work by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) that analyses current funding flows towards health-related GPGs and implications for the broader Universal Health Coverage agenda.

Speaker

Chris James, Senior Health Economist, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)

Chris is an experienced economist specialising in health systems. He is responsible for the OECD’s work on health financing policy. This includes co-leading the OECD Joint Network of Senior Budget and Health Officials.

He also coordinates Health at a Glance, OECD’s flagship report monitoring population health and health system performance across OECD member states. He has extensive experience providing policy advice and analysis to countries across low-, middle- and high-income settings. He holds a PhD from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
