The role of visual story telling in transforming opinions and influencing policy: Documentary screening & photography exhibition

person sitting

Visual storytelling is a powerful tool for communicating complex issues and increasing public engagement with science. The Centre for Global Mental Health are hosting an event to draw the focus on the use of visual story telling in tackling a range of mental health topics from  human rights abuses to mental wellbeing.

The event will commence with a documentary film screening of ‘Breaking the Chains’ by Dr Erminia Colucci (Senior Lecturer Middlesex University London & Honorary Senior Research Fellow, The University of Melbourne). This is an award winning ethnographic documentary that focuses on understanding the context and meanings of human rights abuses against people with severe mental health conditions in Indonesia and measures that can be taken to eradicate such abuses.

After the screening there will be a short presentation about how visual story-telling influences research and policy.

The event will be followed by a drinks reception and a photography exhibition.  The exhibition is based on a previous photography competition launched by the Centre for Global Mental Health on World Mental Health Day 2017, themed, ‘What does wellbeing mean to you?’ All photo entries will be exhibited and there will be opportunities to speak to some of the contestants.
