Surveillance of antimicrobial resistance, use, and consumption in LMICS – perspectives from the first 5 years of the Fleming Fund
Since 2017, the Fleming Fund has been working to improve surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and antimicrobial use and consumption in up to 24 countries in Africa and Asia. The fund has supported the implementation of national surveillance systems, delivering laboratory and surveillance system improvements in more than 250 public sector laboratories and more than 180 fellowships in the human, animal, food safety and environment sectors.
This seminar will examine the role of surveillance in improving clinical care, and in feeding into policy and practice by decisionmakers at all levels. It will try to unpick some of the intricate and sometimes opposing incentives for the One Health Sectors to participate. The talk will also touch on the challenges of One Health approaches to mitigating AMR and discuss the aspirations around sustainability and the uses (and limitations) of surveillance data.

Dr Toby Leslie, Global Technical Lead for the Fleming Fund, Mott MacDonald. Dr Leslie is a double LSHTM graduate (MSc CID 2002, PhD 2009) and has been working on disease surveillance and control in low- and middle-income countries for 20 years. He has worked in Afghanistan and Pakistan, at LSHTM as a lecturer, and at the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria as a technical advisor. He joined Mott MacDonald’s Global Health team in 2015 and is the Global Technical Lead for the Fleming Fund.
