What does ‘leave no one behind’ mean for vulnerable populations?

Responding to the health needs of women, children and adolescents in conflict settings.

Armed conflicts have disastrous effects on civilian populations. They also negatively affect the number of forcibly displaced people in the world, with more than 80 million displaced by the end of 2019, of which three quarters are estimated to be women, adolescents and children.

This lecture will give an overview of the nature and scale of traditional humanitarian responses to mitigate morbidity and mortality in women, children and adolescents in modern armed conflicts. It will interrogate whether the humanitarian community has been able to adapt to the changing nature of armed conflicts to better respond to women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health needs. It will also reflect on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on essential services for these key conflict-affected populations.

Finally, it will suggest a roadmap for future action to ensure that the humanitarian community ‘leave no one behind’.
