Professor Peter Piot was part of the original team that discovered the Ebola virus in Zaire in 1976 and also led pioneering research on HIV-AIDS, women’s health and infectious diseases, mostly in Africa. He was the founding Executive Director of UNAIDS and Under Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1995 until 2008. He became Director of LSHTM in 2010 and is currently special advisor to the President of European Commission Ursula Von der Leyen, on the response to the coronavirus and COVID-19.
Dr John Nkengasong was appointed first Director of Africa CDC in November 2016 to provide strategic direction and position it as an African-owned institution supporting countries to improve surveillance, preparedness, response and prevention of disease threats. He is a leading virologist with nearly 30 years of work experience in public health.
Sarah Boseley is the health editor of the Guardian. She has won a number of awards for her work on HIV/Aids in Africa, including the One World Media award (twice) and the European section of the Lorenzo Natali prize, awarded by the European commission. She is also the author of The Shape We’re In: How Junk Food and Diets Are Shortening Our Lives, published by Guardian Faber.
