Testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Zimbabwe: Who, where, when and how?
Effective STI control is a key priority in low and middle-income countries, where syndromic management is currently the standard of care. This is especially relevant in regions of high STI/HIV prevalence. Newer STI diagnostics integrated into HIV, Antenatal Care or Sexual and Reproductive Health services may provide a feasible and cost-effective solution. This talk summarises findings from completed/ongoing and planned studies aimed at evaluating STI testing approaches in community and facility settings in Zimbabwe.

Dr Chido Dziva Chikwari is an epidemiologist with experience developing, coordinating and evaluating implementation research studies with particular focus on projects evaluating the provision of sexual and reproductive health services for adolescents and young people in facility and community-based settings. In addition to that, her research studies also include projects evaluating HIV testing interventions as well as community-based psychosocial support for children and adolescents living with HIV and their caregivers. This work has involved the validation of oral HIV tests for children and evaluating the use of assisted HIV testing for children by their caregivers.
Chido is currently the principal investigator of the STICH trial and the Zimbabwe lead investigator for the GIFT study which are aimed at improving diagnostics and management for sexually transmitted infections. She is an Assistant Professor at LSHTM while based at The Biomedical Research and Training Institute in Zimbabwe.
