Contrary to what is observed in cervical cancer, Human papillomavirus (HPV) related oropharyngeal cancer is a disease mainly affecting high-income regions such as Northern Europe or North America. In some countries the incidence of the disease is increasing and nowadays most oropharyngeal cancers are caused by HPV. However, there are still many gaps in knowledge on the epidemiology of the disease and its natural history, and how current tools for cervical cancer prevention can be used to reduce the burden of oropharyngeal cancers caused by HPV.
