The inaugural LSHTM AMR Short Course ran last week and was a terrific week of learning for our participants from around the globe. The course was true to its multidisciplinary objectives, reflecting our AMR Centre’s strengths. Students heard from leading researchers of the latest science on AMR from microbiology, pharmacology, economics, anthropology, law, genomics, clinical medicine, veterinary medicine, environmental sciences, environmental sciences, and more. In addition to intensive lecture time, we were able to spend time doing practical work – we grew our own microbes, tested them for drug susceptibility using a range of methods, undertook bioinformatics and made models. Our students’ backgrounds from a range of disciplines, sectors and country settings led to rich discussions about the challenges and opportunities for addressing AMR, and we are excited to see how their work is invigorated by this intensive immersion in AMR science. A HUGE Thank You to Richard Stabler who did an amazing job of putting this course together – including all the additional activities like taking everyone to the Fleming Lab and evening events.
