Symposium | Mass Drug Administration and Antimicrobial Resistance, Feb 2019

We are pleased to announce that the LSHTM AMR Centre, together with the MARCH and Malaria Centres, will hold a symposium on mass drug administration (MDA) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) at LSHTM on Wednesday 20 February 2019.

MDA with antimicrobials is an intervention proposed to reduce morbidity and mortality of entire populations. While theory and some evidence show that this holds promise for achieving health targets, and even for stimulating economic growth, the approach generates some controversy. Critiques of MDA as a ‘magic bullet’ observe that it may have other, unintended and more detrimental effects, including on antimicrobial resistance. This issue is pertinent in child health, maternal health, malaria, HIV, neglected tropical diseases, and chronic diseases. It is relevant to both human and animal health interventions. This symposium will bring together academics and specialists from a range of scientific disciplines to discuss the state of evidence, and to propose an integrated research agenda that addresses these different concerns.
