Overview
LSHTM aims to ensure that its range of taught and research programmes meet most training needs within its fields of expertise. The School is happy to respond to those who require training which differs from this; for example, academic supervision of a research project which forms part of a research degree at another institution (sometimes called a ‘split’ or ‘sandwich’ PhD). Other needs might be attendance at just one element of a course; laboratory training in a particular research technique; or training for workers at a newly-established health facility in a developing country. Occasional study placements can vary in length and tuition will be charged accordingly.
How to Apply
Individuals wishing to apply for occasional studies must meet the minimum entrance requirement for a research degree and will follow the same application procedure as for a research degree. This includes identifying a Faculty and where possible, a department of study, submitting a proposal for the research and submitting the same documents. The timeline for considering applications is the same as for research degrees.
It should be noted that the School gives priority to the needs of students registering for Master’s and Research Degrees, and that the availability of teaching capacity and/or class and bench space for occasional students may be limited in some areas.
Fees
Tuition fees will be charged at the overseas fee rate for the Faculty of study. Periods of less than one academic year are calculated pro-rata of the annual tuition fee.
