Progressing equity, diversity and inclusion is everyone's responsibility.

Staff networks

There are several networks at LSHTM that are run independently by staff and students from across the School and which aim to provide a supportive environment for staff to discuss common experiences and concerns.

Equality networks are staff and student led groups for minoritised groups. A minoritised group being "a group of individuals who are known to have been discriminated against on the basis of a shared characteristic" (Advance HE).

Networks currently at LSHTM include:

  • Disability Network
  • LGBTQ+ Network
  • Parent and Carers Network
  • Decolonising Global Health

Staff and students can find out more about our networks (intranet).

Equality impact assessments

LSHTM uses equality impact assessments (EIA) as a means through which we examine and analyse the decisions we make to determine what impact (positive, negative or neutral) will be on different groups and individuals. An EIA provides a framework for staff to consider how a policy or process might impact staff/students who identify as having one of the characteristics that are protected by the Equality Act 2010. The EIA process helps to ensure we meet our specific duties under the Public Sector Equality Duty, such as, where differences in outcomes or experiences have been identified, investigating ways to minimise these differences to ensure all groups have a similarly positive experience.

EIAs provide opportunities for proactive stakeholder engagement and consultation and are an opportunity to promote access to and participation in the decision-making process. Every staff member at LSHTM has a responsibility to embed equity, diversity and inclusion into their work. The EIA process provides an opportunity for staff to engage with and develop knowledge and understanding of EDI and builds capacity for embedding EDI across LSHTM.

Equality charters

LSHTM currently holds a Bronze institutional Athena Swan award and is working towards a Race Equity Charter submission. Staff and students can engage with the self-assessment process and support this work by joining the Gender Equity Taskforce or Race Equity Taskforce.

Teaching and learning - decolonising the curriculum

Our aim is to ensure that our education programmes are proactively inclusive and reflective of the range of cultures and knowledge systems that make up global health. Through our decolonising the curriculum work, we seek to equip our graduates with the skills they need to be engaged, critical global health practitioners and researchers and support our academic staff to examine their teaching practices and engage in decolonising their teaching.
