The Big Sea: turning the tide on environmental injustice

Join Chris Nelson, writer and producer of The Big Sea, to uncover surfing’s hidden health consequences from the toxic materials used in wetsuits.

Drawing on his award-winning documentary The Big Sea, Chris Nelson will explore the devastating impact of our toxic addiction to Neoprene—the material used to make wetsuits. He will expose surfing’s hidden links to ‘Cancer Alley’ in the USA, where extreme pollution from the fossil fuel and petrochemical industries—and one plant in particular—has led to cancer risks 50 times the national average, along with elevated rates of maternal, reproductive, and newborn health harms, and respiratory illnesses.

But wetsuits are just the tip of the iceberg—Neoprene is use more widely such as in trainers, clothing, and cars—so switching to available alternatives, like natural rubber, is crucial. However, as much of the research on neoprene is funded by chemical manufacturers with vested interests in its continued use, making the case for change increasingly difficult.

Through this lens of the surf industry, Chris will examine how greenwashing and the lack of rigorous research contribute to misinformation, fueling environmental racism and poor health. He will also explore how driving change within surfing can create a ripple effect, influencing other industries that rely on Neoprene.

The event will include a 30 minute talk from Chris, featuring snippets of his documentary, followed by a Q&A and discussion with the audience.

Join us to explore how we, as consumers, researchers, and activists, can leverage our power to drive change in the outdoor leisure industry—and beyond.

Chris’ documentary is currently only available at select film festivals—don’t miss this chance to learn more!
