Inaugural lecture of Professor Michael Marks

Professor Michael Marks’ inaugural lecture will explore his portfolio of research in global health, starting from his time as a clinical fellow at LSHTM living and working in the Pacific to his current work on neglected tropical diseases and sexually transmitted infections in Africa.
Along the way, he will discuss the challenges and opportunities of research during the COVID-19 and mpox pandemics to help inform global responses. He will reflect on how the skills and networks he developed at LSHTM have made these pivots possible.
Michael will discuss the evolving landscape of disease elimination efforts and the role of scientific research in shaping health policy. The lecture will reflect on the broader lessons learned from working in global health, emphasizing the importance of partnerships, innovation, and equitable healthcare access.
The lecture will take place from 17.15 - 18.15, followed by a 1-hour in-person drinks reception in the Pumphandle Social.

Professor Michael Marks
Michael Marks is Professor of Medicine at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Honorary Consultant in Tropical Medicine at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, University College London Hospitals. Michael trained at UCL Medical School before post-graduate training at LSHTM where he has been based since 2013.
