Protecting Children with Disabilities from Violence

There is increasing evidence that children with disabilities may be at higher risk of violence compared to their peers without disabilities. However, little is known about the extent to which children with disabilities are included in child protection mechanisms – which are an essential part of any country’s response efforts to address and prevent child maltreatment. This seminar describes findings of a study commissioned by Plan International, which includes qualitative research in Uganda and Malawi on barriers and enablers to access as well as a quantitative analysis on whether children with disabilities are being included in an intervention to reduce violence in schools through “The Good School Toolkit” in Uganda.
Speakers:
Dr. Karen Devries is social epidemiologist at the Gender, Violence and Health Centre at LSHTM. Her main interests relate to violence against children and women, mental health, sexual health and epidemiological methods.
Dr. Nambusi Kyegombe is a lecturer in global health and development at the Gender, Violence and Health Centre at LSHTM. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on the intersection between HIV, violence and gender.
Morgon Banks is a research fellow in disability and global health with the International Centre for Evidence in Disability. Her main research interests are improving access to social protection and health services for people with disabilities.
