Equality impact assessments

LSHTM uses equality impact assessments (EIA) as a means through which we examine and analyse the decisions we make to determine what impact (positive, negative or neutral) will be on different groups and individuals.

An EIA provides a framework for staff to consider how a policy or process might impact staff/students who identify as having one of the characteristics that are protected by the Equality Act 2010. The EIA process helps to ensure we meet our specific duties under the Public Sector Equality Duty, such as, where differences in outcomes or experiences have been identified, investigating ways to minimise these differences to ensure all groups have a similarly positive experience.

EIAs provide opportunities for proactive stakeholder engagement and consultation and are an opportunity to promote access to and participation in the decision-making process. Every staff member at LSHTM has a responsibility to embed equity, diversity and inclusion into their work. The EIA process provides an opportunity for staff to engage with and develop knowledge and understanding of EDI and builds capacity for embedding EDI across LSHTM.
